Jim Power

Jim Power grew up in the Stephenville area of Western Newfoundland. He graduated from high school in Stephenville in 1963, and in 1968 went on to attend the District Vocational School (DVS) in Gander, NL where he studied in the Aircraft Maintenance Program for two years. Jim was President of the Student Council while at Gander DVS. Between the two school years, during the summer of 1969, Jim’s first aviation job was with Maritime Air Service out of Moncton, NB as an aircraft mechanic on the Grumman TBM budworm spray program out of Gander. During that same period, Jim also earned his Private Pilot Licence at the Gander Flying Club.
Shortly after graduation from Gander DVS in 1970, Jim hired on with Labrador Airways in Goose Bay where he worked as an aircraft mechanic until he earned his AME Licence in 1972. That same year Jim joined the RCMP Air Division in Goose Bay and went on to maintain various fixed wing and helicopter types for them in Ottawa, St. John’s and Gander, until his retirement from the force in 1996. During his 16-year stint with the RCMP in Gander, Jim was Flying Training Officer with the Gander Air Cadet Squadron and, for a while, was Chairperson of the Air Cadet Sponsoring Committee. He was also President of the Central Newfoundland Amateur Radio Club while in Gander.
After retirement from the RCMP, Jim worked for a year as Director of Maintenance with the Department of Natural Resources of Nova Scotia. In 1998 he joined Transport Canada in Halifax as an Airworthiness Inspector where he stayed until his retirement in 2009. After retirement from Transport Canada, Jim did some part time aviation maintenance instructing with the Nova Scotia Community College.
For many years over the course of his aviation career, Jim has been an active member of the AME Association (Atlantic) and has been a regular participant in, and supporter of the Atlantic Region Aircraft Maintenance Conferences. He co-chaired the Halifax ARAMC one year, and was on, or worked with the ARAMC organizing Committee several times. He also served on the Bursary Committee of the ARAMC for a number of years.
Jim now resides in Bedford, NS with his wife Brenda whom he met while attending Gander DVS back in 1968.
